There are several places to download applications for Maemo devices.

It is recommended to use the application manager. It is the easiest way to install software. But if the managers selection isn't enough, you should look through the links above.

Application manager is similar to desktop linuxes apt graphical UIs. It is preinstalled to all Maemo devices.
Application manager shows contents of configured repositories. It is a tool to search and install software. The basic repository list has approximately same content as maemo.org Downloads.
Application manager also handles software updates automaticly.
