It can get warm and might also overheat. How ever I put it every night under the pillow and never had an issue with it.

The possibility exists, however, users have reported no such case. The power usage resulting from using the software is very low. Also, it will help to use SleepAnalyser to put the phone in Offline-mode when recording (thus sleeping).

SleepAnalyser is an application for the MAEMO 5 based mobile phone N900. It can record your movement during your sleep.

It is able to visualise it on a graph to show how much you move during your sleep. This can help to indicate how you sleep. It also has an alarm function and other features. You can set the alarm and a time window (ex. 30 minutes). The Alarm will then go off sometimes during the time window (as soon as you move more), but latest at the set alarm. This should help you to wake up while you are in the light sleep phase. Old records can be loaded and visualised and the graphs can be exported as bitmaps.

Will it overheat under my pillow?

The possibility exists, however, users have reported no such case. The power usage resulting from using the software is very low. Also, it will help to use SleepAnalyser to put the phone in Offline-mode when recording (thus sleeping).

Other devices, namely Android and iOS devices, use another system to be able to continue reading sensors, and therefore will use more energy, and thus have a higher change of overheating. Don't get scared off by these stories.

How does it work?

SleepAnalyser uses the built in acceleration sensor to detect any movement of your body while you are asleep. Those movements are filtered and smoothed to generate a meaningful graph.

Does it also record my snoring?

No it only records your movements.

There are no plans to implement sound recording analysis.

What means lucid dream music?

Lucid dreams are dreams where the dreamer has conscious awareness that he/she is dreaming. The degree of awareness is extremely variable. The dreamer may be well aware that the environment is a dream, but will submit to the flow of the dream without trying to alter any events. At the other end of the spectrum, the dreamer may be fully aware of the dream state and can alter the entire scene and list of events that occurs in the dream to their desire.

Lucid dream music are music that offer assistance to the dreamer and help them achieve lucidity. The music is therefore seen as a cue. When the music is played when the dreamer is dreaming, the dreamer's subconscious mind recognises the cue and the dreamer becomes lucid in the dream.

What kind of music can I use for my lucid dreams

There are a number of different types of lucid dream music. The most common is a recorded message with a voice saying something in the lines of: "you are dreaming, this this a dream.. etc etc" A number of pre-recorded voices are available on the net via google.

A number of sources suggests that this approach may be more effective if recorded with your own voice.

Another type of lucid dream music is playing a specific sound that the dreamer recognises as a cue. This approach requires the dreamer to listen to the music first while conscious and let the mind associate the music with lucidity. For example the sound of a wind chime is often used. Before sleeping, the user trains the mind by listening to the wind chime music and register it on their mind that when this music plays, it signifies that the dream environment is a dream and not real.

In essence, any kind of music can be used as long as the mind associates the music/sound with lucidity.

How do I use the lucid dream function in SleepAnalyser?

The lucid dream functions in the SleepAnalyser is quite limited at the moment. It only allows the triggering of the lucid music in the first sleep cycle. A person's sleep usually becomes deeper through the night and the dream phase (REM sleep) usually increase in length and vividness.

However the function is still usable. As a sleep cycle is usually 90min long in total with 60min of non-REM sleep followed by 20min of REM sleep, it is best to set the delay to 60min.

The idea is to play the music when the user begins REM sleep. A volume of 40% can be used as a starting volume and adjusted to suit the user. It is highly depended on how deep the user's sleep is usually and how tired he/she is.

It may also be better to have a longer delay in future versions as it takes time for the user to fall asleep too and 60min may not be enough of a delay for the start of REM sleep.
