Evaluating Transifex

This task is part of a series of tasks for the overall goal of bringing localization and proofreading of strings used in Maemo, Mer and other applications to the community. As it is a long-term goal that will require the cooperation of several key community and Nokia members, it has been split up into several smaller tasks so that each piece can be pushed into the Maemo SCRUM backlog.

Task

The installation of an instance of the Transifex localization platform for the purpose of evaluating its merits for Maemo, Mer and 3rd party applications for the Maemo platform.

Alternatively, if the resources cannot be gathered together for installing a hosted instance under the Maemo banner, the publicly hosted instance of Transifex could be used for the purpose of evaluation instead.

Perhaps one of the applications in Extras can volunteer to be a test project for Transifex (either using our own hosted instance, or the shared instance on transifex.net) and we can use the feedback from the developer as well as the community to decide if Transifex is a worthwhile way to go.

Resources Required

  • Maemo.org Webmaster

Needed for the actual installation of the Transifex software to the Maemo.org webserver, as well as the initial configuration of the software.

  • Nokia/Maemo localization team

Needed for the purpose of evaluating the Transifex software from the Nokia perspective. They will need to evaluate the software in terms of ease-of-use, implementation within their workflow and ease of integration within the source repositories (SVN, Git, others).

  • Maemo community/community council

Needed for the purpose of evaluating the Transifex software from the community and 3rd party perspective. They will need to evaluate the software in terms of ease-of-use, implementation within their workflow and ease of integration within the source repositories (SVN, Git, others).

Additional Information

It has been recommended by Quim that Maemo Summmit 2009 would be one of the best places to meet and push this task and those related to it forward.

The Transifex product director, Dimitris Glezos has expressed interest in helping to discuss and implement Transifex within Maemo. He has also registered for Maemo Summit 2009 and has requested sponsorship.
