Clarification on the criteria for distinguishing between categories would be very helpful; while the difference of "Born for Maemo" and "Very Nice Ports" is plain, the exact distinction of "Outstanding Utilities" is unclear. benson 17:41, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Don't you think I have it clear myself.  :) At the beginnign the intend was clear: a home applet doing a single task belongs to a different category than a full featured application. However, the line is definitely grey. Proposals for improvement are welcome! --qgil 22:24, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Alpha Applications

Beeing the developer of WeightJinni I was coaxed that it was named on this web page. However I was suprized that it was claimed to be alpha. I think it was initialy labeled "alpha" on downloads but since there was one person that used it every day over some months and found it stable and useable ( 5 Kg :-)) it was raised to "stable" a while ago. So was this labeled because of crashed or missing features? Please contact me! --framstag 06:09, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

The "(still in alpha)" was written by the guy who listed your app. The Downloads page says "not yet well tested beta" and "Stable Quality". "1 vote - 280 downloads" doesn't tell much also about the feedback level. So perhaps you need to clarify things a bit when promoting your app so your users get the picture right.  :) fyi I haven't tested the app myself, nor I pretend to test all the apps proposed at this point. I think it's in Nokia interest, not at the contrary. The developer ask about her problem here, and I pointed her to the bugzilla, but it never happened. Probably, the package was automatically deleted because it was uploaded to a bad place in the repository. --yerga 21:08, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, there is some legal uncertainty connected with those YouTube downloaders/viewers that might make it less desirable for a big company to promote such a program. With Mapper for example that's less of a concern as it has other uses than breaching Google map's TOS, but an application with a single purpose is harder to defend legally. However, the reasons in this particular case might as well be completely different of course, and I'm sure somebody will be able to tell us something about it.

[edit] Relationship with Pearls

We already have one way of singling out remarkable projects - the Maemo Pearls. What's the relationship between these applications and those?

Are we aiming to have these apps be features prominently in the existing Downloads site, in the wiki, or on the maemo.org home page?

I'm unclear what form the final remarkable projects list will take. I was planning on taking the screen cap from each project, put it together with a <200 word introduction, and link to the application page, and have that be a page in the wiki, linked to from the front page.

Screen cap + intro + link to app page is what the Downloads server app does already with page listings. Let's just use that service instead of adding more manual work in the wiki. This will need an improvement to create such pages: flesh for a task in a next sprint?--qgil 20:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
That's what I thought too - seemed like a lot of duplication of effort. So here's my plan: add a check-box to apps to allow admins to tag them "remarkable community projects", and have the equivalent of the featured apps page list them all, rather than just the apps which have featured as pearls in the past. The alternative quick fix is to set a "featured app" time for all the applications we consider remarkable apps, and they will appear in this list right now. I like this solution because it doesn't require hacking the server, and we can always update the time in an app from the list at some stage to bring it back to the front page. --Dave Neary 22:23, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I think we should move all of the currently excluded apps off the page and into the Talk page, and contact maintainers to let them know what they need to do to get in the list of remarkable projects.

These applications have been ruled out on one or more criteria, but can be brought back to the Proposals once they meet the criteria.

  • Labyrinth: An idea-mapping tool with a lot of potential.
  • MaemoPad+: Tree-based notes and sketching application - installs cleanly now
  • USB Control: Take advantage of USB keyboards & drives (drives require a separate power source) w/Nokia cable & adapter.
  • Quiver: Simple UI is fast and flexible. Does one thing--displays photos--well. - tested on a fresh diablo, installs fine.
  • ScummVM: program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files.
  • Pidgin for Maemo: Instant messaging application, ported from the desktop.
  • PhoneLink: Send SMS or dial a number using GPE or built-in (EDS) Contacts and a bluetooth-enable mobile phone. - installs cleanly now

Appear in good condition to the user (e.g. beta/stable, page in Downloads, one-click install...) but are out of the maemo.org extras game.

  • Mauku: Jaiku client designed explicitly for Maemo, and makes good use of the UI including finger / stylus / kinetic gestures.

  • boxar: an easy to learn and easy to master musical instrument for Maemo.

Being consistent, the most remarkable applications for Maemo need to be available in http://maemo.org/downloads

  • Abiword : Abiword's another desktop application which has a really nice port to maemo. A document editor which is very powerful and lightweight.
  • Dates & Contacts : Both part of the Pimlico suite of applications, these allow me to use the N810 as a personal calendar and address book, with desktop synchronisation to boot.
  • Gnumeric : Gnumeric is a great spreadsheet application, and the maemo port has been very nicely done.
  • Gourmet Recipe Manager : A neat way to plan meals.
  • MLB Viewer : For baseball fans, simple UI, subscription to mlb.com required for video, audio is 'free'.
  • NoteCase : a full featured hierarchical note manager
  • VCURLs72 : Major US TV channels on your tablet. Best Edutainment without monthly fee
  • XChat : IRC on your tablet. Nice port.

  • Weightjinni : A simple way to track food consumption, weight loss/gain (still in alpha).
