Switching Off Fit Width To View

[edit] Web pages slow and distorted on your Nokia tablet? Try switching off Fit Width To View

An enthusiastic N800 user was annoyed by how badly and slowly their tablet rendered a particular website. They said it took ages to load the page even on a broadband connection, and when it loaded it looked absolutely awful with graphics distorted and all in the wrong place. The odd thing was that other tablet users who went to the same site found that it loaded very quickly and just like it would through a PC browser. Clearly something was amiss.

Then someone suggested that the browser's "Fit Width To View" option might be responsible, and the mystery was solved.

It seems that although the "Fit Width To View" option is meant to make pages fit the window better, it can occasionally completely ruin the way certain sites look, and severely slow down how quickly they load too.

If you find that your Nokia tablet's browser is displaying pages far too slowly and distorting them strangely, you might want to try switching off Fit Width To View.

[edit] How to switch off Fit Width To View

Here's how to switch it off:

  1. Open a new browser window.
  2. Click on the magnifying glass in the bottom right corner.
  3. Un-tick the Fit Width To View option.

...and then close the browser.

Open a new browser window, try going to the sites that you had problems with and see if they are any better.

If you ever want to switch Fit Width To View back on again, just repeat the above process and tick it instead of unticking it.
