Talk:Task:Improving maemo.org

What is the target?

  • Rethink focus of maemo.org as a whole: Are Tablets for coders or regular users? (I think the latter.) - TimSamoff
IMHO open collaboration is the lowest barriers and passive users aka consumers will be much happier with a pure consumer site. See 2010_Agenda#The_one_site_for_end_users (might move to an own page soon).--qgil 20:28, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Improving the current web structure

What is wrong in the current maemo.org website structure?

  • Navigation is a little hard to...navigate.
    • Certain user-centered items should be prevalent and easy to use (e.g., Downloads, News, Documentation).
    • A lot of the subnav stuff (Roadmap, Lists, Bugzilla, SDK, IRC, etc.) could be removed from the main page and placed in a Developer-centric page.
  • As discussed here, should the main page be more of an aggregated community-driven content portal?

What works about the current web structure?

List positive remarks here:

  • Main page News summaries are good.
  • The idea of posting "The Pearl" is good. Should it just be called "maemo.org Download Picks" (or something)?

Proposals to turn bad in good and create a good structure

Improving the current web content

What is wrong in the current maemo.org content?

  • Too much text alone. This is ok in developer documentation and dense stuff, but for the rest...--qgil 20:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Proposals to turn bad in good and create good content.

  • Snappy texts combined with images and graphics (screenshots, images, pictures...) and video, lots of videos and screencasts. Maemo is beautiful and its community generates a lot of visual stuff.--qgil 20:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Proposals for front page refresh

Several proposals for front page layout were submitted:

A whole wiki?

  • Why not wikify the entire site? Midgard is great software, but going completely wiki would speak well of "openness." - timsamoff
"The entire site" is technically a nightmare. If you mean the static content we can discuss about more areas to be moved to this wiki, well integrated. But Downloads or News rely totally on Midgard and you don't want to wikify them, leave alone bugzilla or garage.  :) What specifically have you in mind?--qgil 20:30, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
That makes sense. I was thinking of all of the "static" content on the site -- really meaning any page that relies on text/image/video/other media. When looking at maemo.org as a whole, pretty much everything aside from those that you mentioned, is content that could be community maintained. --timsamoff 18:57, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

http://maemo.org/community/wiki/applicationrepositories/ doesn't contain information about OS2008, only 2007 and 2006. This is bad because it looks like cruft / unmaintained information.

Discussion moved from front page

  • Website information does not suit the needs of newcomers: How to install or do xy on the IT? Where is recent information about OS2008? Is this page, which I am looking at, an outdated or a recent page on maemo.org? What resources are available for me (alias I am confused by unconnected information sources: gronmayer, internettablettalk, planet.maemo, official Nokia site, internettabletschool, maemo ...) Where is a detailed roadmap for Maemo? Is there an application wishlist for OS2008? Where can I give input/ideas as end-user?
All good points, agreed.--qgil 07:38, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
  • planet-maemo in other languages: For me planet maemo is a very nice aggregation service. This should be available in other languages too. Maybe there should be two versions (per language) of planet maemo: one for developers and one for end users.
We can do multiple languages by creating a folder for each language and adding the proper feeds to those folders. There is also a possibility to display news based on what you have thumbed up and down in the past, but that would be something that can only be done after the planned server upgrade. --xfade 13:49, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Is there a target date for the server upgrade? --jukey 09:05, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

  • I'd like to see something like library.gnome.org - searchable content, generated from latest documentation in packages where possible, and updated regularly. --dneary 10:39, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Interesting. Currently the API documentation is published in a suboptimal way. If this is feasible to do with our current setting then I guess it would be really useful. Worth being a 100 Days proposal by its own.--qgil 10:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Just FYI, library.gnome.org also supports hosting external sources, like it does for gstreamer already. But it's most probably not an option here. fredp might be the GNOME person to talk to. --andre 09:15, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
